Indian Supreme Court Holds ‘Daily’ Hearings on Challenges to Removal of Special Status of Occupied Kashmir

India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) stripped occupied Kashmir of its special status by repealing Article 370 of the constitution in 2019. The move gave people in the rest of the country the right to own property and live permanently in occupied Kashmir.Section 370 limited the powers of the Indian Parliament to enforce laws within states, except in matters of national defense, foreign policy and communications.Kashmiris, international organizations, and critics of the Hindu nationalist-led Indian government see the move as an attempt to dilute the population of Muslim-majority Kashmir with Hindu settlers. explains that. Indian Express reports that a five-member tribunal headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud of India heard the petition and decided in August 2019 to repeal Section 370 by the Indian government. challenged the constitutional validity of“Hearing to commence on August 2 at 10:30 am and then proceed on a day-to-day basis,” the report quoted the Indian apex court as saying. It stated that the Indian government had a day earlier submitted an affidavit in the court, saying that it had “brought unprecedented development, progress, security and stability to the region, which was often missing during the old Article 370 regime” and that it was a “testament to the fact that Parliamentary wisdom…” was “exercised prudently”.However during the hearing today, Justice Chandrachud said the “Centre’s latest affidavit regarding the present status of occupied Kashmir with it’s special status revoked, would not have any bearing on the constitutional issues raised in the petition and it shall not be relied upon for that purpose”, The Indian Express said. Commission set up by Prime Minister to consider Pakistan’s participation of World Cup in India

Interstate Coordination Minister Esanur Rehman Mazari confirmed on Saturday that Prime Minister Shebaz Sharif has set up a commission to consider the Pakistan cricket team’s participation in the World Cup to be held in India later this year.“I received a letter last night regarding his formation,” he told Dawn by phone, adding that a special assistant to Prime Minister Tariq Fatemi had been appointed as the commission’s coordinator. He added that committee members would make recommendations for the Pakistani national team to visit India for the World Cup, but that the final decision on the matter “will be made at the prime minister’s office.”The development comes amid uncertainty over whether the Pakistani team will travel to India for the tournament, which is scheduled to run from 5 October to 19 November. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) formally informed the government last week to allow the national team to visit India for the upcoming International Cricket Council (ICC) World Cup. According to the schedule, Pakistan will host World Cup matches at five venues: Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bangalore and Kolkata. PCB had asked the government for advice on various aspects of playing at each of the venues mentioned. If Babar Azam’s team reaches the semi-finals, they will not be playing in Mumbai, one of the host cities for the final four games. After the ICC upheld the PCB’s request to avoid Mumbai as one of Pakistan’s tourist destinations, the team will host the match in Kolkata instead. India has denied travel to Pakistan for the Asian Cup due to be held in August and September, and Pakistan has responded by stating that the World Cup will be held unless at least part of the Asian Cup matches are allowed in their country, threatened to boycott World cup. The conflict was finally resolved last month when the Asian Cricket Council accepted Pakistan’s match-sharing hybrid model solution between Pakistan and Sri Lanka.India will now play their Asian Cup matches at neutral venues in Sri Lanka.

Indian political party BJP’s “Akhand Bharat” appalled FO Islamabad

Pakistan has expressed big concern over the idea of Akhand Bharat (Greater India), which is being increasingly run by the ruling Indian dispensation.Speaking in a press briefing on Thursday, Foreign Office spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch regretted the installation of a mural at the new parliament building in New Delhi. The mural states so-called modern India, including areas that now constitute parts of Pakistan and other countries. “We are furious over the statements made by some BJP politicians, including a union minister, linking the mural with Akhand Bharat, she said. The FO spokesperson said that “The increasing dissemination of the ideas of Akhand Bharat by members of India’s ruling elite is of great concern.I strongly advise against using rhetoric against other countries just to promote theirfilthy agenda. She urges upon to cooperate with them to build a peaceful and prosperous South Asia. She also expressed her concern over India’s recent attempt to seek the death penalty for prominent Kashmir leader Yassin Malik. Malik was sentenced to death in prison last year in a hoax case marked by fabricated charges and a lack of a fair trial.Despite her deteriorating health, she was being held in inhumane conditions at the infamous Tihar Prison. This political retaliation was aimed at silencing the Kashmiri leadership and intimidating the Kashmiri people. This is a manifestation of India’s unending and widespread crackdown at the IIOJC, where political leaders and human rights defenders are routinely imprisoned on fabricated and unsubstantiated charges,” she said.A spokesman for the vice president called on Indian authorities to stop the farcical trial against Malik.“He must have access to quality medical care and be able to live freely among those around him and his family. India must also immediately and unconditionally release Kashmiri leaders and human rights activists who are unjustly detained in IIOJK and prisons across India,” she stressed.
