FBR freezes PIA bank account for nonpayment

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), the national airline, is in danger of having its accounts frozen by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) for unpaid taxes totaling over Rs 2 billion. The suspension follows a similar incident last year in which 53 bank accounts were suspended by the PIA for similar reasons. These accounts were later restored after the PIA administration ensured timely tax treatment, but the situation has now resurfaced.
In addition, Pakistan State Oil (PSO) refused to supply fuel to three PIA aircraft, disrupting scheduled flights. Affected flights include PK-309 (Islamabad-Karachi), PK-330 (Karachi-Multan) and PK-739 (Multan-Jeddah). A PIA spokesperson confirmed these developments and said efforts were being made at the government level to restore frozen accounts. It was emphasized that flight operations would not be affected by account closure.
In another context, the PIA Board has yet to make a decision on employee salary increases due to financial constraints. Despite financial challenges, the board approved a restructuring of the national airline and discussed the creation of a holding company to deal with real estate and losses. The Council also noted the steps taken to resume direct flights to Europe, the United Kingdom and the United States, as the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) plans physical inspections in Pakistan in September. expressed satisfaction with
