Most people know that photos and videos take up a lot of space on their iPhone, and many people find it tedious to find an alternative memory to store photos.
While you can free up your storage by deleting duplicates or uploading them to another cloud storage service, have you ever wondered why your photos and videos are taking up so much space? such amount? Here’s why:
1. Your 4K Settings
The hidden culprit that takes up so much space in your iPhone is the 4K setting when recording videos.
This setting is available on iPhone 8 and later.
Videos recorded with this setting take up an amazing amount of space. For example, a 60-second video shot in 4K takes up 475MB, while a 10-minute 4K video can take up 4GB of storage.
2. RAW images
This is the raw image data that your camera stores when you take a picture without processing or compressing the image.
While a compressed JPEG takes up about 1 MB of space, a RAW image takes up 25 MB.
How can I disable it?
To make sure your video doesn’t take up too much space, turn off the 4K setting by going to Settings > Camera > Video Recording. A list of video quality options for recording will appear. In this list, the first three are HD, while the last three are 4K.
If you need to save space, choose one of the first three HD options.
Although the 4K setting gives you high-quality video, it is recommended that you transfer the video from your device after recording.
To turn off the RAW Photo setting, go to Settings > Camera > Format, then turn off Apple ProRAW.
