ECP secretary Omar Hamid Khan resigns due to health issues

Omar Hamid Khan has resigned from the post of Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) secretary due to health reasons, Geo News reported on Sunday.

Sources said Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan (CEC) has not yet accepted Khan’s resignation as head of the polling body.

The development comes weeks before the general elections scheduled for February 8, with key political actors such as Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) This comes amid claims that there is a lack of competitive conditions.

ECP Special Secretary Syed Asif Hussain dismissed PTI’s claims that it was not provided with a level playing field to participate in election-related activities.

In a written reply to the Supreme Court on PTI’s petition seeking contempt action against the poll body, the ECP asked the Supreme Court to “dismiss the contempt petition with costs”.

PTI’s petition seeks contempt of court against the ECP secretary, Inspector General of Police (IGP), chief secretaries of four states and the home minister for “non-compliance” with the SC order issued on December 22, 2023.
