The highly awaited International Cricket Council (ICC) Men’s ODI World Cup 2023 will feature a 15-player roster, according to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday.
Rohit Gurunath Sharma will lead the Indian team, and Kananur Lokesh Rahul, a right-handed wicketkeeper-batsman, has been named to the roster after getting cleared to compete in the mega-event.
Earlier this year, while playing in the Indian Premier League, Rahul sustained a thigh injury. The final phases of the 2023 Asia Cup, which is currently taking place in Sri Lanka, will also join his colleagues.
Sanju Samson, Tilak Varma, and Prasidh Krishna were also left off of India’s team. Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, and Hardik Pandya are the team’s captains.
All teams have until September 28 to make roster changes, after which any changes will have to be approved by the International Cricket Council (ICC).
In the opening match of the World Cup, India will face Australia on October 8 in Chennai.
It should be noted that 10 teams will battle for the elusive title across 10 venues from October 5 to November 19, with Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad hosting the opening and final of the tournament.
