Islamic New Year holidays: Saudi Arabia announces first day of Muharramism

Saudi Arabia’s Supreme Court on Tuesday declared the first Muharram day of the 1445 Islamic calendar year after the sighting of the crescent moon.

The court investigated and verified reports of moon sightings and said: According to the state-run Saudi Press Agency (SPA), a crescent moon was sighted on the night of the 29th of Dur Hijjah (Monday, July 17). Evidence is scant.
Based on this, the Supreme Court ruled that Tuesday (July 18) would be the last day of the month of Durhijja, the report said.
This means that Wednesday 19th July marks the first day of Muharram and the beginning of the Islamic New Year 1445.
